Our Homeschool Curriculum
One of the most important decisions we make as a homeschool mom, is which curriculum we will use. There are so many out there! I can’t tell you how many nights I have stayed up doing curriculum research while the rest of my family slept. I came to the conclusion that Abeka seemed to align with all of my major boxes I wanted checked.
THIS DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN IT IS THE BEST FIT FOR YOU! I’m not here to argue why it is, or is not the best curriculum. I’m just here to tell you why I chose it. There are lots of things I absolutely love about it…
- Every tool, resource, and textbook is based on our Christian beliefs.
One of the subjects you can choose to teach is, Bible. I love their Bible lessons so much. Bible is one of my favorite subjects these days. I get to teach my children lessons straight from God’s word. In the Bible curriculum, my kids have to memorize Bible verses. Within 2 weeks, both of my kiddos, 6 &4, could recite the Lord’s prayer. WOW! I was so impressed with their ability to memorize scripture. I love that we work on it together and that I’m memorizing right along with them. And the best part is, that the curriculum only uses the King James Version of the Bible!
2. They use a traditional approach to education.
I love the thought of traditional learning. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! I was taught using some of these same educational approaches. This common core math approach that the local schools are using, blows my mind! I guess I’m too old. You can’t teach this old dog new tricks. Abeka uses the principal of repetition to facilitate academic excellence. I love that I don’t need anything fancy to teach my children. We take it back old school and they are thriving. My oldest read his first sentence just this week. In Kindergarten! On a side note, I’m pretty sure I was still just coloring and napping when I was in Kindergarten.
3. It’s an entire years worth of school mailed to me in a brown box,
By that, I mean you get everything you need to successfully teach your children their grade level. You can buy the teacher and student bundles or you can buy the books separately. The bundles come with everything you need for the entire year. I may pick an add on item here or there, but even so, they have everything you could possibly need right there on their website. I like that its all right there. I don’t have to worry about getting books to go along with my lessons. It makes it so much easier. And, I am all for easy!
